The number of cello concertos by Haydn has long been disputed. Of the originally nine works attributed to him, only two have survived. The C major concerto was lost until 1961. A manuscript was discovered in Prague, which gifted this wonderful concerto to cellists and all music lovers. Nicolas Altstaedt is not only one of the best in his field but is also interested in historical performance. He plays with a Baroque bow, delivering Haydn's highly virtuosic masterpiece at a fast tempo. One must say, this is not only convincing but also very spectacular and captivating.

While Haydn's cello concerto is considered a standard work for cellists, one can look forward to another fascinating piece for cello with Boccherini's Concerto G. 480, which unfortunately is heard far too rarely. The same applies to the other works in the concert, which are dedicated to the Classical era. Here, Mozart's popular Prague Symphony is paired with a symphony by Leopold Koželuh, reminding us once again that there are many other excellent composers besides Mozart and Beethoven. And when it is performed by the brilliant Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, it is pure joy!
