The event is sold out. There are no tickets available at the box office. In a cheerful style, Haydn and Mozart are presented in a new, fresh auditory experience: The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (FBO), conducted by Gottfried von der Goltz, with its 26 musicians, offers the possibilities of a tutti ensemble plus soloists, as required by the style of a Concerto Grosso. The FBO opens the second concert of the current season at the Martinskirche with Mozart's Serenata Notturna, KV 239. Composed in 1776 for the carnival in Salzburg, the piece impresses with its lightness and humor right from the start. A march opens the serenade, presumably the soloists entered the festive hall with music while the rest of the orchestra was already waiting. The solo quartet is particularly highlighted in the trio of the minuet, while the final rondo thrives on a cheerful interaction between soloists and tutti. Joseph Haydn is also known for his hidden and open musical humor. Of the three surviving solo concertos for orchestra and keyboard instrument, the concerto in D major (Hob. XVIII:11) is the most famous and popular. In the Müllheim performance, a fortepiano is used, which enhances the authentic sound profile more than a modern concert grand piano. Soloist Sebastian Wienand is a member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. He studied harpsichord, fortepiano, and basso continuo in Basel and is well-known to a broad audience through performances at festivals and notable CD recordings. Wienand has also participated as a long-time musical assistant to conductor René Jacobs in opera productions in Vienna, Brussels, and Berlin. A divertimento in E-flat major and the symphony in G major, known as Surprise, showcase further beautiful facets of Haydn's work.
