The Martinskirche opens its doors and invites you to experience the new concert season with four extraordinary classical concerts. Let yourself be enchanted by the unique atmosphere of the church and the sounds of masterful compositions. In celebration of two anniversaries, violin sonatas by Beethoven and Bartók will be performed to kick off the concert series at the Müllheim Martinskirche. This season marks its 20th anniversary under the artistic direction of Harald Schneider. Guest performers include violinist Sophia Jaffé and pianist Hansjacob Staemmler, both younger professors at the Frankfurt University of Music, who have received prestigious awards and have extensive experience in the international concert scene. Béla Bartók will be featured this year, marking the 80th anniversary of his death, with his Violin Sonata No. 1 from 1921. On this occasion, Sophia Jaffé has released a CD this year featuring works by Bartók. The more than half-hour-long Violin Sonata opens up a sound world that the English patron Walter Wilson Cobbett referred to as "Hungarian fortresses of sound," accessible only to violin virtuosos. "Bartók boldly tends towards the anarchic," noted Theodor W. Adorno in 1925 when he praised the two sonatas as "the epitome of Bartók's style." Embedded within the two spirited outer movements of Sonata No. 1 is an introverted Adagio, introduced by a vulnerable and delicate violin solo, to which the piano seems to approach only hesitantly. The two sonatas for violin and piano in A minor and F major, presented in the first part of the concert, were composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1800 and were initially grouped together as "Deux Sonates" under opus number 23. Later, the publisher separated the two pieces, as they had mistakenly been printed in different formats. The F major sonata was later also called the "Spring Sonata," evoking feelings of spring, according to its admirers. In both works, the two instruments interact completely equally.
