The Martinskirche opens its doors and invites you to experience the new concert season with four extraordinary classical concerts. Let yourself be enchanted by the unique atmosphere of the church and the sounds of masterful compositions. Bach on the Steinway She is considered one of the leading Bach interpreters in the world. Now, the Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt is coming to Müllheim with a solo program dedicated to Bach. Her repertoire is wide-ranging. However, her deep affection for the works of the Thomaskantor was proven by her recording of all of Bach's piano works on 14 CDs for the British record label Hyperion. In 2020, she received the Bach Medal at the Leipzig Bach Festival, becoming the first and so far only woman to receive this honor, which has been awarded since 2003. Harald Schneider, the artistic director of the concerts at the Martinskirche, has known Hewitt for a long time and is pleased that the new Steinway grand piano will be at the center of the evening's events. She will open the concert with the Toccata in D major. Bach composed this sparkling work, full of virtuosity, in 1705 at the age of 20. "For 150 measures, the 20-year-old Bach swept over the keys in this piece – to the astonishment of his well-behaved audience in Arnstadt," the chamber music guide amusingly notes. This will be followed by the French Suite in G major, featuring a lively Gigue in 12/16 time at the end, and the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor. The latter, created during Bach's time in Köthen around 1720, gets its name from the chromatically ascending lines of the fugue theme. After the intermission, the Partita in G major will be performed, another work in the style of baroque dance suites. The seven movements are described as a "sonorous journey through Europe," as noted by SWR in 2018 under the category "Music Piece of the Week." Further stylistic facets of Bach's works for keyboard instruments are explored in the well-known Italian Concerto. Finally, the Prelude and Fugue in A minor provide another awe-inspiring glimpse into the virtuosic symmetry and musical depth of Bach's compositional art.
