Online lecture by Prof. Dr. Werner Plumpe. The fact that the current world order has come to an end is evident not only in the increasing number of wars and escalations but also in the intensifying trade conflicts – most dramatically and far-reaching between China and the USA, but especially with Russia. In this lecture, economic historian Werner Plumpe demonstrates how history has always been shaped by economic rivalries that often led to open wars – from the conquest of the New World through the age of colonialism, the emergence of nation-states, and the bipolar world order of the Cold War to today's hyper-connected world. The search for lucrative raw materials runs like a thread through the centuries, always showing that economic interests overlap in complex ways with questions of national identity, cultural ideas, and power-political strategies. Prof. Dr. Werner Plumpe taught economic and social history at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main until 2022. From 2008 to 2012, he served as the chairman of the Association of Historians in Germany. In German language.
