Play "The Robbers"

The Südsehen theater ensemble, under the direction of Robert Ludewig, presents the classic of German literature and stage history by Friedrich Schiller on the stage of the Theaterring Schramberg. Here they are again! Hold your heritage close and think carefully about which side you want to take. "The Robbers" are making their appearance once more. Schiller's early drama "The Robbers" depicts the deadly confrontation with the paternal order that denies them shelter and love and can no longer offer a future. Karl is essentially Everybody's Darling, who finds the world too narrow and conventional. Partly due to his own overestimation and idealistic radicalism, and partly through the intrigue of his brother, he is cast out from the sphere of his father and society. Now he seeks revenge. The strong man Karl rises to become the captain of a band of robbers that violently and brutally breaks the laws. The idealistic spirit of resistance turns into anarchy, and outrage against the system transforms into merciless violence. Franz is nobody's favorite. The absence of paternal love and the injustices of nature lead the second-born to become a rational materialist and intriguer, who wants to force his (self-created) place in the world. Both are power-hungry individuals. Still very much dedicated to Sturm und Drang, "The Robbers" is also the first play in the German language that clearly articulates the idea of the republic. The old social order has outlived itself. The authority of the fathers offers the sons only rebellion against the system. It is nothing less than the struggle between law and (individual) freedom, as well as between two extremes of modern thought, that Schiller addresses here.
