Phantasm: Risky Polyphony - Dangerous Music for Viols

The viol consort Phantasm takes the audience on a journey into the "risky" musical world during the Peasants' War from a European perspective, using the ancient instrument of the viola da gamba. They perform rarely heard, strikingly beautiful works by English composers such as Thomas Tomkins (1552 – 1672), Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625), Matthew Locke (1621 – 1677), and the famous Henry Purcell. All of them, influenced by uprisings in England in the 16th century, developed independent and unique musical ideas and created radically new, subjective forms of music composition. The viol consort Phantasm was founded in England in 1994 by Laurence Dreyfus and has been awarded three Gramophone Awards, among others.
