At a peace conference in Rome, Israeli Lizzie meets Palestinian Nadim Abu Hanis. She is a successful writer, he is a human rights activist and photographer. They decide on a joint project: they want to get to know each other's lives and then publish it in a book and a film. They quickly realize that "they inhabit the same insane asylum, just in differently locked wards." The kafkaesque daily life almost makes them give up on the project. The entire tragedy of life in this region leaves us astonished, as the difficulties faced by Israelis and Palestinians in living together are almost unbelievable to us. Doron reveals the fears of both, the problems of engaging with one another, the differing perspectives on the Shoah and Naqba, the great catastrophe as the Palestinians refer to the consequences of the 1948 war. They want to become friends but repeatedly fail due to the past. Lizzie Doron, born in 1953 in Tel Aviv as the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, became known for her novels about the second generation after the Shoah. With "Who the Fuck is Kafka" – one of the most important literary treatments of the Middle East conflict – and "Sweet Occupation," she turned to current political issues.
