At the Heidengrabenzentrum, the Celtic world comes alive through archaeological finds from over 2000 years ago. Dieter Hagmann will show in his lecture how reconstructions are created and provide insights into trade, society, and the fortifications of the oppidum Heidengraben. Over two thousand years ago, life thrived in the region of Heidengraben, the largest late Celtic metropolis on the European mainland. Behind mighty walls and gate structures, workshops, trading houses, and residential buildings crowded together – a center that radiated far beyond the Swabian Jura. Even today, the fortifications can be recognized as elevations in the landscape. However, those who look closely will discover traces of a world that disappeared long ago – and whose secrets archaeologists are gradually unraveling. On this evening, the gate to this past will open. New research findings at Heidengraben hint at how complex, interconnected, and prosperous this Celtic city must have been. With exciting insights into excavations, surprising finds, and state-of-the-art analytical methods, a picture emerges of a culture that combined craftsmanship with political foresight and once connected Europe. Experience the latest archaeological discoveries regarding the late Celtic settlement of Elsachstadt and the impressive wall system of Heidengraben, which extends over almost 18 km². Dr. Jörg Bofinger, state conservator and head of the department for prehistoric archaeology at the State Office for Monument Preservation, will take you on an exciting journey into the past. He will report firsthand on his many years of research activities – from the scientific management of large excavations to modern digital communication methods. Learn more about current projects and research – discover the role of Heidengraben as a significant trade and cultural center of the Late La Tène period.
