Lecture: Spa Resort for Everyone

Deutsche Zentrale für Tourismus e.V.

Willhelmstr. 7, 79379 Müllheim im Markgräflerland

Lecture at the Blankenhorn Palace Admission free – no prior registration Thursday, October 2, 7 PM Even ordinary people went to the spa. Hardly noted in literature, farmers, members of lower classes, and the poor were nonetheless among the visitors to the healing springs and often even made up the majority of the guests. However, since they were not the focus of official publications and historical accounts, the "ordinary" spa-goers lived in the shadows. Dr. Fred Kaspar explores these forgotten spa visitors and questions the general societal significance of spa culture, which also includes aspects of pilgrimage, emotional relief, and a temporary escape from everyday conventions. Dr. Fred Kaspar, former senior conservator and architectural historian at the Westphalian Office for Monument Preservation of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe, is a recognized expert in the cultural and architectural history of spa towns, about which he has published extensively. The lecture is a collaboration between the local curatorial board of Müllheim/Markgräflerland of the German Foundation for Monument Protection and the Markgräfler Museum.
