Archaeology Reinterpreted - On the Architecture of the Heath Grave Center and Tower

At the Heidengrabenzentrum, the Celtic world comes to life through archaeological finds from over 2000 years ago. Thomas Ott takes visitors on a journey behind the scenes of the creation process – from the initial design to the finished implementation. The Heidengrabenzentrum, the centerpiece of the Heidengraben experience area in the districts of Erkenbrechtsweiler, Grabenstetten, and Hülben, is much more than an exhibition building – it is a walkable hill, a gateway into the world of the Celts, and a prime example of contemporary architecture. Designed by architect Thomas Ott of ott architekten BDA, the award-winning structure harmoniously integrates into the landscape of the Swabian Jura, creating a unique connection between art, architecture, nature, history, and landscape. In his lecture, Thomas Ott takes visitors on a journey behind the scenes of the creation process – from the first draft to the completed project. He explains how consciously the center was integrated into the terrain, which design decisions shape the character of the place, and how sustainable construction and flexible usage concepts contribute to a vibrant cultural venue. A special focus is on the Heidengrabenturm, which – inspired by the Celtic Triskele – rises as a distinctive landmark over the landscape. From its platform at over 18 meters high, a new perspective opens up on the vastness of the former oppidum and the surrounding nature. The lecture offers exciting insights into the connection between architectural precision and atmospheric impact – and shows how a building not only creates space but also makes history tangible.
