Exhibition "Continuity and Change" for the tenth anniversary of the new building of the University Library Freiburg

The exhibition "Continuity and Change" will illuminate the architectural history of the University Library from July 31, 2025, to January 14, 2026 (extended) and will portray selected staff members who organize the diverse services of the library. In July 2015, the building of the University Library Freiburg was reopened after being extensively renovated over a period of seven years. Since then, the "new" library, with its impressive - and at the same time polarizing - architecture, has shaped the cityscape of Freiburg. However, its function and usage in the digital age have also changed with the new building. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the reopening, the library will present the exhibition "Continuity and Change" from July 31 to January 14, 2026 (extended). It can be viewed during the library's opening hours, which are daily from 7 AM to midnight, in the freely accessible parlor of the library. The exhibits highlight the complex planning process and the challenging renovation work. Additionally, it reflects on how much the working environment, services, and responsibilities of the staff have changed in the context of digital transformation. Today, the Freiburg University Library is a central place for learning and research, with up to 16,000 visits per day. It ensures access to a comprehensive range of digital and printed information and offers services for research, study, and teaching. The library stands, on one hand, in continuity with its long history, while on the other hand, the ambition of being a library for the digital future was already articulated at the beginning of the planning for the new building 20 years ago; this ambition continues to hold true. The accompanying program will include the film "Time Spaces," which documents the ambitious construction project.
