Core fruit variety identification at the Eduard Lucas House

1. Apple and pear variety identification in pomology for over 100 years. The Eduard-Lucas-Haus in Pomology Reutlingen will once again host a variety identification event for apple and pear varieties on the first weekend of October. The variety identification is a valuable service for all those who cultivate and own fruit trees, whether in orchards or home gardens. This year marks the first full yield in fruit cultivation in the district since 2018. Fruits are now hanging on trees whose buds often froze in previous years. Before table fruit is unknowingly submitted as cider fruit or left behind, it is worthwhile to have a variety identification done by specialists at the Eduard-Lucas-Haus. The variety identification team, led by state pomologist Hans-Thomas Bosch, who has been coming to the annual variety identification for years, is now offering identification of all pear and apple varieties for the first time at the Eduard-Lucas-Haus. For the variety identification, at least five undamaged ripe fruits per variety are required, which should have a typical fruit size and good coloration. As waiting times are to be expected, numbered tickets will be issued for the order of service and called in sequence. For those waiting, there will be an offer of coffee, cake, and apple spritzer, a small variety exhibition, consultation opportunities at the book table, and an exhibition room with objects from the Glems Fruit Tree Museum. A fee of two euros is to be paid per fruit sample.
