The Woman Who Loved (World Premiere) Free adaptation of the novel "The Gentlemen" by Angelika Schrobsdorff With this theater performance, freely based on the novel "The Gentlemen" by Angelika Schrobsdorff, we continue our exploration of strong female characters. Rarely has a female writer succeeded so well in shaping elements of personal fate with such intensity as with the character of the half-Jewish Eveline, who experiences the end of the war in Bulgaria at the age of sixteen and, barely an adult, hungry for life, glides from adventure to adventure as she returns to occupied Germany. The "Gentlemen" are not only the political powers but also the men who have shaped the life of the young girl, from her first love to the film director with whom her marriage falls apart, to the first man who rejects her. Angelika Schrobsdorff expressed painfully honestly what was often taboo in the 60s or 70s. Her precise depiction of the dynamics between the sexes remains relevant today and touches us. The novel was then described as a psycho-erotic thriller. This is true, but not in a sleazy way: she succeeds in accurately describing inner psychological processes, finding words to depict the desire between men and women and the different ways of dealing with sexual attraction in an unsentimental and precise manner, and her story is so exciting and captivating that it continues to hold us emotionally in its grip to this day.
