Rarely has a female writer succeeded so well in shaping the contours of personal destiny with such intensity as in the character of Eveline, a half-Jewish girl who experiences the end of the war in Bulgaria at the age of sixteen and, barely an adult, hungry for life, gliding from one adventure to the next, returns to occupied Germany. The “gentlemen” are not only the political rulers, but also the men who shaped the young girl’s life—from her first love to the film director who breaks up her marriage, to the first man she rejects. Angelika Schrobsdorff expressed with painful honesty what was often taboo in the 1960s and 1970s. Her precise portrayal of the dynamics between the sexes remains relevant to this day and touches us deeply. The novel was described at the time as a psycho-erotic thriller.
