Rarities and Innovations
Few people are likely familiar with Franz Schreker. In the 1920s, he was as well-known as Richard Strauss or Arnold Schönberg. He developed a unique style characterized by rich orchestration with changing timbres through ever-new combinations of instruments and diverse harmonies, sometimes bordering on atonality. The Romantic Suite, Op. 14, one of his early late-Romantic works, will be performed, which already reveals his later characteristic musical language.
In contrast to Schreker, Johann Sebastian Bach is today one of the most famous composers. In his organ work Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, he employs innovative harmonies for his time that point far into the future. The fugue was created as part of his application for an organist position in Hamburg and is based on a Dutch folk song. A version arranged by Timothée Méthou for orchestra will be performed.
Anton Weidinger, court trumpeter in Vienna, inspired Johann Nepomuk Hummel with his invention of the keyed trumpet to compose his Trumpet Concerto in E major. The work fully exploits the then-unique possibility of this innovation to play chromatic notes across the entire scale. It is one of the most popular and frequently performed works for trumpet and is presented in the now-standard version in E-flat major.
