The museum in the small palace in the Hofgarten is once again showcasing its greatest treasure: the foundation collection featuring works by artists of the Berlin Secession. The artists who came together in the late 19th century to form the Berlin Secession and turned towards avant-garde movements in art (Impressionism, Naturalism, and socially critical Realism) faced significant challenges in the Kaiserreich, which was characterized by Wilhelminian aesthetics and patriotic historicism. "Impressionism" was used as a derogatory term, and artists or works that embraced modern movements were excluded from exhibitions. It is thanks to the Berlin Secession and the artists' rebellion against the paternalistic view of art that Berlin eventually developed into a capital of art and still deserves this title today. The collection, donated by the Wertheimer art collector Wolfgang Schuller, features works by Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Max Slevogt, Fritz von Uhde, Lesser Ury, Walter Leistikow, and many more. Works by female members of the Berlin Secession, such as Käthe Kollwitz, Dora Hitz, and Sabine Lepsius, are also on display. These remarkable artworks are particularly highlighted in the rooms of the small palace in the Hofgarten, and a visit to the exhibition is always a special experience.
