Herb Walk: Smoking for Advent

In all cultures, smoking has been practiced and is still practiced even today. Smoking connects our human spirit with cosmic energy and the nature that surrounds us. For as long as humans have existed, aromatic smoke has accompanied prayer and meditation. Many spiritual practices are associated with smoking, not just during the "Rauhnächte" (the Twelve Nights). There are various explanations for the origin of the term "Rauhnächte": one of them directly refers to the traditional spiritual smoking with incense.

However, smoking is not just a spiritual experience. Depending on the herbs used, smoking can have stimulating, concentration-enhancing, or relaxing, calming effects. It can promote recovery after illnesses or disinfect the air in a room. Until the Middle Ages, smoking was part of daily room and body care and a ritual for sleep disturbances, dream work, and even matters of love. Even today, rituals can be celebrated, for example, during flu season in families, where air-purifying herbs are symbolically used to chase away viruses and bacteria from the home.

There is a rich, often culturally specific knowledge surrounding smoking. In our culture, it has almost been forgotten, but it is currently experiencing a small renaissance.

During this tour, you will get to know herbs, stems, and branches that are suitable for smoking. Under guidance and using dried herbs and conifers from the roadside, we will assemble and ignite smoking bundles. Feel free to bring a hot drink and a cushion for the stations along the way.
