Your nature park guide, Stephan Rieß, will highlight the connections and backgrounds along the way:
The von Baumbach family received the Tannenberg as a fief from the Hersfeld monastery in the 14th century and built the castle on an older, abandoned fortification. The strategically important location of the Tannenberg—historically situated in the border area between Franconia and Saxony, and in the 14th century between Hesse and Thuringia—made it sensible to construct a castle there.

What brought wealth to the castle lords was its favorable position relative to various trade routes, including the Via Regia. The rights to provide escort protection for the trade caravans were significantly expanded by the founder, Ludwig von Baumbach, through skillful purchases and exchanges of land.
You will hike approximately 7 km, not only but also on the premium trail P18 Tannenburg.
Participation is only possible with prior registration. Please register with us via email at info@naturparkfrauholle.land or by phone at 05657 64499-0.
