City Exploration of the Sole Spa Bad Rappenau on "Shank's Mare" Long before salt and brine, and thus the history of saltworks and spas, propelled the development of Bad Rappenau from a knightly village to a spa and bath town, and finally to a large district town, the Romans left their distinct marks with an estate. The Lords of Helmstadt, the von Gemmingen family, and the monastery in Wimpfen im Tal had various ownership shares in the area. Even the Duchy of Württemberg had a hand in it for a long time. The water castle in the "Lower Village" and Burgeckstraße in the "Upper Village" bear witness to this tumultuous history. The city tour begins at the Kurpark lake, then proceeds first to Salinenstraße, passing the Catholic church to the Protestant town church at the church square, where a market takes place twice a week. With a view of the old and new town halls, many anecdotes can be shared, with the church and market playing a role as well. Afterwards, the tour continues past colorful flower beds - along the watercourse - to the water castle. A brief insight into the water castle is possible during the city tour. Dressed in medieval costume, the builder of the water castle, "Eberhard von Gemmingen," will greet visitors and share stories about the time and the construction of the castle in 1601. The conclusion takes place in the attic of the water castle. Here, you will hear interesting stories from the past and present surrounding the Bad Rappenau landmark and its builder. As a memento, each guest will receive a beautiful Bad Rappenau salt sachet. The tour is barrier-free and thus suitable for wheelchair users. Seating is available at the various explanation points.
