Oath Ceremony Ulm

"Swearing Monday" is the holiday of the people of Ulm - always on the penultimate Monday in July. The political Ulm looks forward to the swearing ceremony, in which the mayor accounts for his actions. It marks the beginning and end of the political year in Ulm, after which the municipal political summer break begins. What is "Swearing Monday"? Who swears what to whom and why? It is the mayor of Ulm who, every year from the balcony of the "Swearing House," first reports to the people of Ulm what has happened in the city since the last Swearing Monday. He then raises his right hand and vows to the citizens of Ulm, "to be a common man to rich and poor in all equal, common, and honest matters without any reservation, so help him God." This is the swearing formula, which is, by the way, six and a half centuries old, with which the swearing speech concludes every year on Swearing Monday. To avoid misunderstandings: "common" in this case is derived from "community" and not from "commonness."
