Tour of the Laufer Trotte The Culture and Heritage Association welcomes many visitors. The Laufer Trotte is open from May 1 to October 25, 2026, with refreshments available, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
The old wine press in Alsenhof in Lauf, located in the foothills of the northern Black Forest at the foot of the Hornisgrinde, is a unique piece of cultural history and craftsmanship.
It was discovered a few years ago in a half-ruined building known as a wine press house. It was renovated with great effort and, supplemented with all kinds of wine-making equipment, opened to the public in 1970. Wine-making around the Alsenhof, beautifully situated in a small meadow valley, is ancient. Its beginnings can be traced back to the 14th century. Since the 16th century and later, references to a wine press in a special building can often be found in documents relating to changes of ownership, so it can be assumed that the basic structure of the wine press dates back to the 16th century.
The farm has changed hands many times. It was mostly owned by noble families, and at times it belonged to the collegiate foundation in Baden-Baden, whose canons liked to fill their wine cellars with the fine Alsenhof wine. A record harvest is reported for 1808. From the Alsenhof, 16,000 liters found their way into the cellars of the collegiate foundation. The wine press is made entirely of oak and weighs a total of almost 300 hundredweight. The press beam is made from an oak trunk and is more than 8 meters long. The **3.85-meter-high spindle** is a masterpiece of craftsmanship.
The daily output of the wine press was 2,500 kg of grapes, from which 1,800 liters of grape juice were extracted every day. It ran from the must vat through the floor directly into the cellar below, whose barrels held more than 10,000 liters.
