The saltpeter miners fought for democracy and human rights nearly 300 years ago. The special role this struggle played in our region and in Herrischried is revealed by the saltpeter with much empathy, enthusiasm, and passion. The Saltpeter Tour - an emotional journey to the freedom fighters. Michael Eckert, a farmer and saltpeter miner by profession, was a passionate freedom fighter. In the 18th century, saltpeter miners went from farm to farm in the Hotzenwald. Here, they collected the potassium nitrate necessary for the production of gunpowder from the walls of the stables. It was a laborious task that Michael Eckert also pursued alongside the various demands of his farming as a side job. The Herrischried saltpeter miner Michael Eckert shares with great empathy, enthusiasm, and passion the struggle of the saltpeter miners for democracy and human rights that took place 300 years ago. The uprising of the local farmers, the resistance against the power ambitions of the neighboring monastery of St. Blasien, and the dissolution of a once extraordinary unity among the Hotzenwald farmers are presented in an engaging and entertaining manner against the backdrop of the Klausenhof Open-Air Museum. Following this exciting journey through time, we offer, if desired, our delicious saltpeter feast. COST: €10.50 including museum admission.
