The Grandfather Who Was Sold

**Rural Grotesque By Anton Hamik** **Premiere:** January 5, 2024 The grandfather lives on his son-in-law’s farm, where the son-in-law is constantly dealing with all sorts of troubles caused by the grandfather and the farm’s financial situation. Now the maid is quitting too, because she can no longer put up with the grandfather’s insolence. Should they get rid of the old man? Meanwhile, a wealthy horse dealer is trying to marry his daughter to the farm’s son—a move that’s surprising, but could at least alleviate the debt burden. However, the son is by no means willing to agree, since he doesn’t even know the bride. The horse dealer isn’t acting out of altruism either; he’s heard that the grandfather supposedly owns two houses, so he now persuades the farmer to sell him the grandfather for a pittance. He hopes to inherit the estate after the grandfather’s passing. But he didn’t count on the shrewd old man. This folk comedy is a fireworks display of sharp punchlines and witty twists. The centerpiece of the play is the quick-witted and brilliant grandfather. He is up to the task in virtually any situation, never at a loss for words, always has a cheeky retort ready, and, to everyone’s surprise, he pulls the strings and always has one more ace up his sleeve.
