A tour of the MÜHLENWEGMUSEUM with Monika Leister. Fritz Mühlenweg (born 1898 in Constance and died 1961 in Allensbach), a trained merchant, participated as an accountant in Sven Hedin's last expedition to East Asia starting in 1927 and traveled through Mongolia three times until 1932. He later processed his encounters and impressions in two novels, numerous stories, poems, and paintings. In 1932, he met the painter and illustrator Elisabeth Kopriwa at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After their marriage, they settled in Allensbach in 1935 and lived there with their seven children. His first printed book was a 1946 adaptation from the Chinese Book of Songs, the Shi Jing. This was followed in 1950 by the award-winning book "On a Secret Mission through the Gobi Desert," which was translated into eight languages. The Mühlenweg Museum presents this exciting biography with breaks and continuities from merchant, traveler in Mongolia to artist, and especially Mühlenweg's achievement in narrative cultural mediation. Photographs, the expedition film, exhibits, and remarkable loans from the family as well as from his estate are showcased.
