The history of the town of Tettnang is closely linked to the Counts of Montfort. The New Palace is a representative example of this. Visitors can view the bel étage with its cabinets, living rooms, and banquet halls. The New Palace in Tettnang documents the princely aspirations of the counts. The 18th-century Baroque four-winged complex is architecturally on a par with the great palaces of Europe. The rooms on the bel étage are considered Rococo jewels. The Green Cabinet looks like a precious garden pavilion inside the palace. This masterpiece of interior design is the work of the famous Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer, who created the figures and stucco latticework. The so-called "Vagantenkabinett" (cabinet of vagabonds) houses expressive portraits of the "vagabonds": minstrels, showmen, traders, and craftsmen who once populated the squares and streets of the towns. The builders and clients for the castle were the Counts of Montfort, who ruled the Tettnang territory since the 12th century. After the first castle was largely destroyed by fire in the mid-18th century, the count's family commissioned the New Castle, even though they were heavily in debt. Master builder Jakob Emele oversaw the reconstruction of the castle. Count Franz Xaver hired leading artists from the Lake Constance region for the interior decoration, including stucco artist Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer and Angelika Kauffmann and Andreas Brugger for precious paintings.
