Starting in early June, the Natural History Museum Karlsruhe will present a new major special exhibition. "Gathered" showcases selected objects from all areas of the museum's collections and highlights surprising connections between the objects in unexpected groupings. It is the scientific collections that distinguish a museum from a mere exhibition space. The Natural History Museum Karlsruhe is one of the major research museums in Germany – its storage facilities house several million collection items! Botany, mycology, zoology, entomology, paleontology, and geology: each collection area is characterized not only by its unique collection but also by specific preparation methods and research focuses. The exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes look and provides insights into the storage facilities and the work of staff in preparation and research. For the exhibition, some of the objects from the collections will be brought to light! Fossil teeth from the largest shark species that ever lived, the impressive specimen of the sea elephant Tristan from Wilhelma, a petrified lightning bolt, or the oldest minerals on Earth: the special exhibition presents 32 selected objects and object series. They tell unexpected and curious stories while also highlighting the challenges and opportunities of collecting, preserving, researching, and communicating in the museum. They have been newly grouped into five thematic areas: "Legendary," "Extreme," "Well-preserved?," "Baden," and "In Series." Objects and More In the exhibition, the selected objects and object series are the stars. Films and interactive stations highlight exciting aspects of the objects and convey them in an engaging and playful manner. Models and graphics for tactile exploration, audio descriptions, texts in Braille and easy language, films in German sign language, as well as barrier-free architecture enable equal participation for all individuals. Accessibility For the special exhibition, the museum received the Universal Design Award for accessibility. Information on the accessibility of the exhibition can be found here.
