Buttenhausen was one of the few Jewish rural communities in southern Württemberg. The museum and guided tour tell the story of life at that time, the history of the community, and its demise during the Nazi era.
Buttenhausen was one of the few Jewish rural communities in southern Württemberg. In 1787, Buttenhausen's then local lord, Phillipp Friedrich von Liebenstein, wrote a letter of protection for Jews, allowing 25 Jewish families to settle there. The history of the Jewish community until its end during the Nazi era is illuminated by the Jewish Museum, which was redesigned in 2013. Located on the first floor of the former Bernheim secondary school, the exhibition illuminates the Jewish community and its life in Buttenhausen in five exhibition rooms.
