Sougwen Chung "Ecologies of Becoming"

Sougwen Chung explores the collaboration between humans and machines and has been named one of the most influential figures in the field of AI by Time Magazine. The exhibition is a joint project of the Kunstverein and the IPAI Foundation. Time Magazine has recognized Sougwen Chung as one of the 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence – and now Chung is coming to Heilbronn. In a joint exhibition, the Kunstverein Heilbronn and the IPAI Foundation present "Ecologies of Becoming," which highlights a decade of Chung's artistic work. Chung grew up in Canada, currently lives in London, and leads the studio SCILICET there. Founded by Sougwen Chung, SCILICET is a pioneer in interdisciplinary collaboration between art and robotic technologies. By understanding technology not just as a tool but as a co-creator, SCILICET develops new configurations of the interplay between humans and machines beyond automation. The London-based, internationally active studio explores these ideas through installations, performances, exhibitions, and artifacts. For over a decade, Chung has been investigating this creative collaboration between humans and machines – particularly how machines can be not only tools but also active partners in the artistic process. For the project Drawing Operations, Chung was awarded the Japan Media Arts Excellence Award in 2016. This is the first time the Kunstverein Heilbronn and the IPAI Foundation are collaborating on this artistic project. The Kunstverein Heilbronn presents a retrospective that makes visible ten years of Chung's artistic and technological development. At the IPAI, Chung now shows a new installation in which painting and sculpture interact with each other.
