The procession of the gentlemen of the laundry guild, dressed in tailcoats, top hats, and mourning ribbons, makes its way to the town fountain. Once again, on Ash Wednesday, the revelers gather as the painful conclusion of the Fasnet takes place at the Wolfach town fountain with the washing of the empty wallets. Dressed in black mourning attire, with tailcoats and frock coats, and wearing their top hats adorned with mourning ribbons, the members of the "Wäschergilde" parade through the laundry alley, past the tax office, where the first tears are shed at the wall, towards the town fountain, carrying their empty wallets visibly hung on bean poles. In the icy water, the wallets are washed amidst lamentations and wailing, and then hung on a rope to dry. At the "Krone," they meet one last time for a mourning meal, traditionally featuring stockfish, before they linger in sorrow during a subsequent funeral speech for the Fasnet. The mourning for the end of the Fasnet, as expressed by this typical custom, will soon transform for the revelers into anticipation for the next Fasnet. For starting from Ash Wednesday, as they say in Wolfach, "it's already time to get ready again."
