Burladingen Carnival Play

**Anniversary: The 20th Fasnetsspiel since its revival in 2006.** As early as before 1900, Fasnetsspiele were performed in Burladingen, with plays staged outdoors on a float. This tradition continued between the world wars. Even after World War II, theater performances continued, though they were then held in the Lindensaal as well. However, the tradition of the Fasnetsspiel then fell completely dormant during the 1950s. In 2006, the Nautle Carnival Guild revived this tradition to restore a small part of its former glory to Burladingen’s street carnival. The Hauzeglader and the bands will be out and about in the town center starting at 9:00 a.m.: as early as the morning, over 200 participants will parade through the streets of Burladingen in groups alongside all of the town’s Lumpenkapellen. The “Hauzeglader,” together with the Kassenbuben and musicians, will invite everyone to the Fasnetsspiel. Starting at 2:30 p.m., the individual groups will assemble at the Fehlaquelle near the carnival float and be introduced. At 3:00 p.m., the carnival play will be performed on the float under the open sky. Tradition is emphasized: women’s roles are played by men, featuring exaggerated fake beards, the clattering of the Kassenbuben’s wooden boxes, the brides’ wreaths, and much more. The Nautle are especially delighted to welcome visitors in traditional carnival costumes, and refreshments will be plentiful throughout the carnival play. The guild hall will be open, as will the street food stalls. After the carnival play, “Hauzegscheke” (traditional carnival treats) in the form of eggs and bacon will be distributed free of charge to visitors.
