Jordan – an ancient land of culture and an island of peace in a war-torn region.

Report on a trip and background on the political situation by Meinrad Bumiller, Diplomatic Theologian, Waldkirch. Jordan is a fascinating country in the heart of the Middle East. It combines ancient history, breathtaking desert landscapes, and warm hospitality. The Waldkirch Educational Institute organized a study trip to Jordan in April 2025: the ancient Petra, carved from rock, the fairytale capital of the Nabataeans who controlled the incense route, Gerasa, the "Pompeii of the Middle East," Mount Nebo, where Moses was allowed to see the promised land, the bizarre desert landscape of Wadi Rum, where Lawrence of Arabia fought, the Dead Sea 413 meters below sea level, and the vibrant modern capital Amman. Encounters and conversations opened up to the participants a world-open and tolerant country. It became evident how Jordan manages to achieve religious tolerance and political stability, unlike almost all other states in the Middle East.
