Samhain at the Heath Grave Center – Between History and Myth

On November 1st, the Heidengrabenzentrum, together with Riusiava and the druid from Heidengraben, celebrates the Celtic festival of Samhain – featuring Living History, crafts, myths, and an atmospheric evening performance marking the transition into the dark season. On this special day in the annual calendar, the Heidengrabenzentrum invites visitors to join in the celebration of the Celtic festival of Samhain, alongside the Living History group Riusiava and the druid from Heidengraben. Throughout the day, Riusiava provides vivid insights into the daily life of the Celts – with authentic clothing, historical crafts, and engaging discussions about research and reconstruction. As darkness falls over the burial mound field in the evening, a special performance begins at 6 PM: the druid from Heidengraben leads an atmospheric presentation of the Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the transition into the dark season. Between myth and research, chills and contemplation, an impressive experience unfolds that makes the world of the Celts sensually accessible – without losing sight of the historical distance. Samhain, one of the four major festivals of the Celtic calendar, marked the beginning of winter and was considered a time between worlds. Although our knowledge of the religion and culture of the continental Celts is limited, the festival allows for an approach to their world – serving as a bridge between archaeological research and lively representation. The event invites participants to experience history with all their senses: scientifically grounded and critically examined, atmospherically staged, and in an authentic location of Celtic past.
