Special exhibition "Elephants - Wild Animals and Cultural Icons"

Majestic and strong - gentle and wise? Elephants have always been fascinating wild animals. The exhibition takes you on a journey through 60 million years of evolution: lifelike models showcase the development from the prehistoric trunked animal to the mammoth and the modern elephant. The agency eli – a loose idea GmbH and the Natural History Museum in Ottoneum Kassel present life-sized elephants at the Residenzschloss Mergentheim, highlighting their biology and closeness to humans. The cultural history of the pachyderm is also presented - as a deity in India, a weapon in war, or a work animal in the jungle. The hunt for ivory, the loss of habitat, and species conservation are also perspectives of the presentation. An interactive station invites visitors to march with Hannibal's elephants across the snowy Alps. In the poet's room, guests can get to know the Goethe elephant.
