More than Bollenhut: Hasemann – Liebich - Hauptmann Three Artists – One Landscape November 9 - December 28, 2025 Bürgerzentrum Krone-Ladhof Elzach The city of Elzach presents an extraordinary painting exhibition at the Bürgerzentrum Krone-Ladhof from November 9 to December 28, 2025, featuring works by Wilhelm Hasemann (1850–1913), Curt Liebich (1868–1937), and Karl Hauptmann (1880–1947). For the first time, 30 oil paintings by the three Black Forest painters from a significant private collection in Freiburg can be experienced together publicly. All works depict motifs from Elzach and its surroundings. The exhibition title "More than Bollenhut" refers to one of the symbols of the Black Forest. Although the bright red woolen rose hat is part of the traditional attire for unmarried women only in the municipalities of Gutach, Kirnach, and Reichenbach, the paintings by Wilhelm Hasemann and Curt Liebich, along with their widespread distribution in the form of postcards, illustrations, and advertisements, have made the Gutach costume, as well as the distinctive Black Forest farms, trademarks of the Black Forest. The three artists come from very different corners of Germany: Hasemann from Mühlberg/Elbe on the border of Brandenburg and Saxony, Liebich from Wesel on the Lower Rhine, and Hauptmann from Freiburg. However, all three settled in the Black Forest: Wilhelm Hasemann and his later brother-in-law Curt Liebich moved to Gutach in 1880 and 1892, respectively, while Karl Hauptmann retreated to his Molerhüsli at Herzogenhorn after World War I. All three were proponents of plein air painting. In all weather conditions, they went outside to capture the land and people on canvas. Particularly dear to Karl Hauptmann was the depiction of the different times of day and seasons with their diverse moods. This is evidenced by the skilled representation of themes such as "Spring in the Black Forest" or "Winter Thunderstorm Passing! Elztal." Hasemann and Liebich, both heavily involved in the Baden Black Forest Association, also aimed to document the various Black Forest costumes in their works. Thus, in the Elzach exhibition, alongside the Gutach Bollenhut, the Mühlenbach gold cap and costumes from St. Georgen, Lehengericht, Schapbach, and the Breisgau can also be admired in the images. The painting exhibition was curated by the Freiburg art historian Dr. Ruth Hötzel-Dickel. The exhibition is open on Fridays from 5 to 8 PM and Sundays from 2 to 5 PM. The exhibition will be closed on December 26, the second day of Christmas; instead, there will be a special opening on Saturday, December 27, from 2 to 5 PM.
