5,300 km Adventure on Hooves and Paws An unassuming TV moment ignited a long-held vision: to experience the historic Amber Road on horseback – the ancient trade route that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Baltic Sea. What drives us? – The longing for an authentic travel experience beyond beaten paths, the curiosity about whether this way of traveling still leads to trade, exchange of knowledge, and friendships, and the unquenchable desire to share the slowness and intensity of such an adventure with our special animal companions. After two years of intensive preparation, the time has come: We set off at the German-Swiss border – autonomously and with a unique team: the former "emu killer" mule named Pablo, the unexpected mare Sati, the wonderfully recovered, loyal horse Schanchot after a severe injury, the once-timid gentleman on mule legs Cordobes, and the rescue dog Bandit, saved from a well. We all become companions on this eleven-month journey through Europe. It’s about more than just picturesque landscapes. We illuminate the polarities of travel: the overwhelming beauty of the Alps and nature parks contrasts with the challenges of tourist hotspots and monocultures. Heartfelt encounters with locals stand in stark contrast to unexpected nighttime knife attacks. The dream of endless wandering collides with the offer to put down new roots. Idyllic paths lead to absurd situations, such as being forced to use a highway. We share stories of deep friendships and the painful losses that come with them, of predictable foreseeability and the traumatic moment of nearly losing a fingertip, of boundless trust from strangers and the critical moment when we are mistaken for spies.
