A widespread custom is to set up and display nativity scenes during the Advent and Christmas season. While Francis of Assisi set up a nativity scene with a live ox and donkey in 1223, it became a tradition in the 16th century, promoted by the Jesuits, to depict the birth and events leading up to Epiphany with modeled figures. In the pilgrimage basilica of Birnau, you can admire a large baroque church nativity scene in the Neapolitan style, featuring light and sound effects as well as moving elements. The nativity scene includes around 70 figures, 100 sheep and animals, and 320 lights.
