Artist talk with Felicitas Mathé

The artist Felicitas Mathé takes you into a world full of music, movement, and nature. Felicitas Mathé grew up in a musical family in Waldshut. After graduating from high school, she initially studied music in Basel, Detmold, and Hanover, and as a concert violinist, she received, among other awards, the Prize of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. She played for many years as a concert violinist in the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg and has been fully dedicated to professional painting since the end of her stage career. She can completely transfer her working methods as a musician to painting. Living with music, as well as the diversity of the magnificent landscapes of the Black Forest or the Bodden landscapes on the Darß, shape her artistic work. This gives rise to the two main themes in her artistic work: Felicitas Mathé draws inspiration from musicians and dancing people. The hands, as carriers of human expression, are particularly important to her, as "a person making music FEELS intensely through every fiber of their hands." The familiar feeling of making music flows strongly into her painting and drawing. Thus, portraits and contemporary dance representations emerge. Musical forms such as "theme with variations" determine her painterly compositions. In addition to music, experiences in nature, with its overwhelming beauty, hold great significance for the artist, and she develops a modern, freely interpreted world of images from this.
