Practical Hoof Care for Small Ruminants: Proper Trimming, Maintaining Health, Enjoying the Process

The workshop provides foundational knowledge and practical skills for hoof care in sheep and goats. It begins with an introduction to the anatomy of the hoof, as well as suitable tools and their maintenance. This is followed by a practical exercise using the hooves of deceased sheep and goats. In the second part, there will be a practical phase at the Ortlieb goat farm in Häg-Ehrsberg (about a 5-minute walk). Here, handling will be practiced directly on the animals without a hoof stand. An experienced hoof trimmer will support the practical part. To ensure animal and farm hygiene, overshoes, protective suits, and disposable gloves will be provided. While part of the group works with the animals, another part can practice the care and maintenance of hoof trimming tools. Participants may bring their own hoof trimming tools, which will be cleaned and disinfected on-site after the course. Additionally, farm-specific scissors will be used during the practical session.
