Encounters and Conversations "Loving Life and Embracing Death" We tend to push thoughts of death aside. It seems too uncomfortable and too hurtful to us. It helps our loved ones if we establish the distribution of our estate and consider our burial arrangements. Sometimes we also address questions about medical care at the end of life in an advance directive. But otherwise, we mostly live as if we have "all the time in the world." Yet farewells are a part of life. Do we still have ideas and a language for what happens to us when we die – and beyond – in our time focused on the visible? In tradition, there are impulses for an "art of dying," which is connected to an "art of living." For the images and hopes we have regarding death influence how we live. The thought of our finiteness, even in the middle of our lives, can help us appreciate every moment and accomplish certain things before it is "too late."
