Exhibition: "Christmas into a New Life"

Under the title "Christmas into a New Life," paintings by the artist JoKarl Huber from Weikersheim-Laudenbach are on display. Born in Laudenbach in 1902, Huber experienced the First World War. After completing an apprenticeship as a craftsman, he graduated from high school, studied in Tübingen, and then devoted himself to painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Under the Nazi dictatorship, his paintings were classified as "degenerate art" in 1933, confirmed by an official painting ban starting in early 1934. Despite the effects of the Nazi regime, Huber found his own ways to work freely and remain unyielding: he turned to the still-allowed printmaking, lithography, and etching. Art in architecture was also permitted. In 1937/38, he and his future wife created fresco paintings in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Weil der Stadt. In Munich, he made the stained glass window "Life of Jesus" for this church: in it, the tempter as the devil bears the facial features of Adolf Hitler. After his conscription into the military in 1938, his service in World War II, and British captivity, Huber returned home as one of the first prisoners of war shortly before Christmas 1945. With scant remnants of paint, he began to paint again. He remained artistically active until his death in 1996. In this exhibition, JoKarl Huber's daughter, Dr. Ursula Huber, provides insights into her father's diverse artistic work. His tumultuous biography, with its ups and downs and varied contacts, is reflected in it. The opening of the exhibition is public, and interested parties are warmly invited. The exhibition "Christmas into a New Life" can be seen until Friday, March 27, 2026, at the New Gallery during the opening hours of the monastery.
