An ancient custom is also practiced in the Upland region: On Easter Sunday (in Schwalefeld and Neerdar on Holy Saturday), Easter fires are lit in all districts after nightfall. In prominent locations, high above the villages, they shine brightly and penetrate the darkness.

The tradition of the Easter fire combines pagan and ecclesiastical rituals. As far back as ancient times, fires were lit in spring to drive away winter and evil spirits. The fire was believed to have a purifying effect. The ashes were scattered on the fields or kept in the house, in the hope of growth, fertility, and protection from malevolent forces.

Later, the custom was incorporated into Christian practices. A reference to the continuation of Germanic spring fires can be found in a letter from Pope Zacharias to Boniface in the year 751. In many regions, a fire was kindled and blessed in front of the church during the Easter Vigil, from which the Easter candle was subsequently lit. The spark jumping onto the wood symbolizes the resurrection, while the burning candle represents the light of Jesus Christ in the world. Evidence of the established tradition of Easter fires dates back to the 15th century, although it is not always clear whether they have ecclesiastical or secular roots.
