Schwetzinger SWR Festival: In C

In C consists of short musical modules that each performer can freely repeat, shift, and overlay – at their own pace and duration. With his composition In C, Terry Riley made music history. The work, created in 1964, is considered the starting point of Minimal Music and continues to open new horizons today. Inspired by African polyrhythms and collective playing styles, it moves in floating harmonic spheres while simultaneously unfolding an exhilarating rhythmic energy. The special feature: In C is not a finished piece in the conventional sense. It consists of short musical modules that each performer can freely repeat, shift, and overlay – at their own pace and duration: The performers become co-composers. Every voice is indispensable, every attitude is audible. This creates a vibrant group process where listening, responding, and contributing are equally required. Under the direction of the Schwetzingen resident artist Dorothee Oberlinger, the Orangerie becomes a resonance space for both musicians and the audience, as well as a place for a special communal sound experience.
