Swiss Day in Tiengen

The origins of Schwyzertag date back to the early 15th century. The Tiengen local festival has been celebrated since 1415. There are numerous events for young and old, as well as various rides, food stalls, and amusement stands. Schwyzertag is traditionally held in Tiengen on the first weekend in July (Friday–Monday). Visitors can look forward to a large stage, food stalls, and a small amusement park with rides, shooting galleries, and more on Tiengen's market square. Several events take place around the Heimatfest. On the first evening, there is traditionally a large concert in the Catholic parish church, a spectacular Heimatabend (traditional evening) on an open-air stage on Saturday, a large parade on Sunday, and the Stadtmusik's request concert on Monday. Numerous other events for young and old round off the festival program. *At the beginning of the 15th century, the quarrelsome Duke of Urslingen laid claim to Tiengen. On August 1, 1415, he attempted to storm the town with the intention of capturing it. However, the people of Tiengen did not allow this to happen, defended their town, and put the duke to flight. The inhabitants of Tiengen attributed the favorable outcome of this conflict to the help of God and the Virgin Mary. In gratitude, they vowed to hold an annual town festival. The Schwyzertag was born. The vow made at that time can be found today in the 1500 yearbook of the Catholic parish of Tiengen. At the end of the 15th century, Swiss troops conquered the town and destroyed parts of it. In memory of the victims of this event and the destruction of the town, the anniversary was extended and over the centuries the Schwyzertag developed into the festival we know today.*
