The origins of the Schwyzertag can be traced back to the early 15th century. The Tiengen hometown festival has been celebrated since 1415. Numerous events for young and old, as well as various rides, food stalls, and entertainment booths are ready for visitors. The Schwyzertag traditionally takes place in Tiengen on the first weekend in July (Friday to Monday). During this time, a large stage, food stalls, and a small amusement park with rides, shooting booths, and more can be found in the Tiengen marketplace, much to the delight of visitors. Several events are held around the hometown festival. On the first evening, there is traditionally a large concert in the Catholic parish church, a spectacular hometown evening on an open-air stage on Saturday, a grand parade on Sunday, and the wish concert of the city music on Monday. Numerous other events for young and old round out the festival program. At the beginning of the 15th century, the quarrelsome Duke of Urslingen laid claim to Tiengen. On August 1, 1415, he attempted to storm the city with the intention of capturing it. However, the people of Tiengen did not allow this, defended their city, and drove the duke away. The fortunate outcome of this conflict was attributed by the residents of Tiengen to the help of God and Mother Mary. In gratitude, they vowed to hold an annual city commemoration. Thus, the Schwyzertag was born. The vow from that time can be found today in the commemoration book of the Catholic parish of Tiengen from the year 1500. At the end of the 15th century, Swiss troops captured the city and destroyed parts of it. In memory of the victims of this event and the destruction of the city, the commemoration was extended, and over the centuries, the Schwyzertag evolved into the festival we know today.
