"His daily meals consisted of 4 courses and the meat that his hunters roasted on a spit, which he preferred above all else." If we are to believe this account of Charlemagne, we need not worry that the ruler of the Frankish Empire had to leave the table hungry. However, much less is written about the diet of the general population, who had to ensure that everyone was fed from spring until the end of the long winter.

In addition to contemporary written records, we can today evaluate many other scientific sources that provide insights into the dietary habits of the 6th to 10th centuries. Whether it be archaeological finds such as dishes and food remains or the analysis of climate data or soil samples – this thematic tour offers an insight into the variety and challenges of early medieval food production.
