That the waltz-drunk "Duidu, Duidu" and its relaxed counterpart "Dudidubidu" are actually just a stone's throw away from each other, not much more than "a warm embracing dance away" – the masters of Mnozil Brass have known this for ages. For more than thirty years, the seven virtuosos have effortlessly zigzagged between Johann Strauss and Frank Sinatra, between Shostakovich and Prince, or passionately leaped from Schubert to their kindred spirits in Queen. They care little for the solemn grandeur of one side or the supposed banality of the other. But Strauss – whom both Brahms, Wagner, and Verdi, as well as the craftsmen and the girls from the suburbs (and even a Gershwin) fervently admired – was the founding father of the nonchalant frolicking between genres. Strauss was the first to produce hits by the dozen, he hired an arranger to work faster, and he understood that he could reproduce his sound worldwide with his brothers. He was the first to blur the lines between high and low culture and became a mass phenomenon as the waltz king – the cash registers never rang sweeter.
