Jennifer Higdon, the talented New Year's child from Brooklyn, born in 1962, is known for her unconventional and vibrant compositions. Her "Dance Card" from 2019 is a true masterpiece that presents dance music in a new, exciting light. Conductor Mei-Ann Chen leads the orchestra virtuously through this piece, which invites both listening and engagement. In contrast are the "Symphonic Dances" by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Op. 45. This monumental late work by the Russian composer was created during his years in American exile and is a highlight of symphonic music. The complex rhythms and rich harmonies make it a challenging yet overwhelming experience for both the orchestra and the audience.
