Flip Philipp Quintet featuring Bertl Mayer

Flip Philipp is dedicating himself to the early compositions of Joe Zawinul and is finding new ways to the roots of his music with a very special ensemble.

Joe Zawinul, as a pioneering figure in fusion jazz, shaped the international music scene like no other. In 1966, already in New York, he wrote the song "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" for the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, which became a hit in soul jazz. Zawinul's experimental spirit and unique sound have inspired numerous musicians and made his influence in modern music palpable to this day. Flip Philipp, a percussionist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, encountered Zawinul during a guest appearance he conducted: "He is simple and totally to the point, hears everything, and tells the musicians what to play, without any lengthy discussions. On top of that, he drank Sliwowitz all evening and was completely drunk, but he played like a god – that was Zawinul magic. He sits down, and music emerges that is unique."
