Japanese Folk Fusion

When tradition meets avant-garde: Mitsune combines Japanese folk music with the wild, colorful sounds of psychedelia, jazz, and film music. At the center is the Tsugaru Shamisen, a three-stringed lute whose archaic sound comes to pulsating life in the hands of the two musicians – accompanied by driving percussion, warm double bass, and multi-part vocals.

With great joy in playing, virtuosity, and a sense of theatrical presentation, the Berlin quartet transforms the stage into a visual and musical celebration. Their songs tell of ancient myths, inner journeys, and the power of cultural encounters.

The ensemble, featuring musicians from Japan, Australia, and Greece, has gained international attention in a very short time. Their album Hazama (2022) was celebrated by Rolling Stone and Songlines Magazine, reached the Top 10 of the Transglobal World Music Charts, and was nominated for the German Record Critics' Award.

Mitsune represents modern folklore in the best sense: boundless, sensual, and captivating.

Shiomi Kawaguchi - Shamisen, bamboo flutes, vocals; Youka Snell - Shamisen, vocals; Daigo Nakai - Bass; Petros Tzekos - Percussion.
