Gruorn - the abandoned village in the midst of solitary nature Full-day tour 9 km Gruorn is an abandoned village with a tumultuous history. The old village structure is still clearly recognizable, with its belt of traditional fruit trees, the street layout, some cellar ruins, and the pond. The once prosperous farming village owed its wealth not least to its natural water supply, which was a rare commodity in the Alb region at the time. With the expansion of the military training area, the residents had to leave with heavy hearts. The names on the gravestones in the cemetery, which features the notable St. Stephen's Church from the 13th century, are a testament to this time. We continue on private paths into the grazing landscape, which tells the story of the centuries-old tradition of transhumant sheep farming. Characteristic limestone grasslands, sparse tree and shrub growth, and a great diversity of species shape these historically evolved cultural landscapes. Here, rare delicate plants and enormous ancient trees grow. We enjoy the tranquility and seclusion of the place, accompanied only by the wind and birdsong. In many places, military relics testify to the long military use of the area. It is unmistakable that nature is slowly but steadily reclaiming its habitat. Amidst this wild nature, we encounter the remnants of the Reisach explosives testing area, another piece of the more recent past of the site. Our return path leads us back to Gruorn. There is an option to stop at the old schoolhouse or to have a picnic in the square in front of it. If desired, a guided tour of St. Stephen's Church can be organized by a professional church guide. A visit to the small museum offers further interesting insights into the history and fate of its inhabitants.
