More Light! Northern Lights – Myths and Facts

Auroras have fascinated and inspired humanity since time immemorial. Many cultures have developed their own explanations and myths to interpret this impressive natural phenomenon. These stories often reflect the worldview, spirituality, and environment of the respective peoples. They show how humans have tried to explain this captivating natural phenomenon and give it meaning. Whether seen as spirits, gods, warriors, or omens, or as a transition and bridge to the world of our ancestors – the auroras have always played a special role in the narratives of these cultures. Their mystical appearance still stimulates the imagination today and connects us with the ancient traditions of the world. Now for the facts we know today: Auroras are caused by the interaction of solar wind, the Earth's magnetic field, and our atmosphere. They are not only beautiful to behold, but they can also be dangerous. They provide insight into the complex processes between the Earth and the surrounding cosmos. The lecture provides an overview of the myths in various cultures and informs about the current state of research. The speaker, Georg Henneges, is a graduate physicist. After studying in Mainz, he worked at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) as well as at the National Labs in Los Alamos, USA. For the past forty years, he has been leading the "Kraichgau Observatory Gondelsheim," where astrophotography, solar observation, and public outreach are primarily conducted.
